Coronavirus impact: Water pollution in Fulbari Mahanada River declines, variety of fishes witnessed

Rajganj, 05th May: The COVID-19 lockdown is healing the planet in a way never seen before in living history. Due to the reduced pollution in water, a large variety of fishes were sighted swimming in the Fulbari barrage Mahananda River. However, due to fewer customers, the fishermen are being forced to sell the fishes at a much lower price.

Fishes are found in the Mahananda River all year round, however, due to the decline in pollution following the ongoing lockdown, different species of fish including Boroli, Nariyali, Tangra fish are being witnessed swimming in the water.

Shankar Sarkar, a fisherman, said that even rare fishes like Boroli and Nariyali are available now than before. But even though fishermen like Sarkar are fishing in such a large quantity, very few customers are available to purchase them. And so, they are left with no other choice than to sell the fishes in very low price.

“There are about 40 fishermen around the area. I also make a living by fishing. But the fishes are being sold at lower price as there are no customers. Now I just hope everything goes back to normal,” Sarkar added.
