Siliguri, 26th June: In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion in Siliguri, the Public Works Department (PWD) had resumed the construction of the flyover bridge from Burdwan Road to Mahatma Gandhi More. However, the project had been halted midway two years ago, leaving the bridge in a semi-finished state. Unfortunately, instead of easing the problems faced by the public, the incomplete flyover exacerbated the situation, causing dissatisfaction among local residents and businesses.
There were doubts whether the construction work of the Burdwan Road flyover would ever be completed. However, after resolving issues related to railway land, as confirmed by Mayor Goutam Deb in his recent statement, the construction work has recommenced. The Mayor had held discussions with the state’s Public Works Minister to address the matter.
To mark the resumption of construction, a ceremonial event was held in the presence of Mayor Goutam Deb, where prayers were offered at the site. Mayor Deb expressed relief that the issues regarding railway land had been resolved, leading to the restart of the Burdwan Road flyover project. He further mentioned that the construction is expected to be completed by May 2024, providing much-needed relief to the people of Siliguri from traffic congestion.
It has been reported that the budget for the flyover construction has also increased. The flyover, estimated to cost Rs 90 crore, aims to enhance traffic flow and ease the daily commutes of residents in Siliguri.
