Siliguri, 17th February: The city’s cleaning staff went on a strike and staged a sit-in protest in front of Siliguri Municipal Corporation in support of various demands.
2771 permanent and temporary cleaning staff from 47 wards of Siliguri joined the demonstration programme. Initially, they staged a protest rally in front of Baghajatin Park. Following which, they protested by throwing all garbage on the streets near SMC.
It is to be noted that the Uttar Banga Safai Karmachari Samiti has been protesting for several days in support of several demands including job permanency and pay hike. Despite this, no appropriate steps have been taken so far.
Kiran Rauth, president of the association, said that cleanliness work has been suspended at the moment. They have also urged other districts to discontinue the services. He warned of staging continuous demonstrations until their demands are met.
