Citizens’ convention held by Nagarik Protirodh Mancha near Baghajatin Park in Siliguri

Siliguri, 28th January: A citizens’ convention was organized by Nagarik Protirodh Manch near Baghajatin Park in Siliguri to protest against the government’s alleged indifference towards the demands of ASHA workers and incidents of their harassment. The convention reiterated the long-standing demands of ASHA workers and voiced strong opposition to the treatment they have faced.

Speaking at the convention, Namita Chakraborty, Darjeeling district president of the West Bengal ASHA Workers’ Union, said that ASHA workers from across the state had marched towards Swasthya Bhavan on 21st January to press their demands. She alleged that police attempted to stop the workers at various locations. In Siliguri, they were reportedly obstructed at NJP station, where around 30 ASHA workers were detained by the police.

Despite these efforts, the march continued, she said. Later, a meeting was held at Swasthya Bhavan with five ASHA workers, but they did not receive any satisfactory response from the authorities. She further stated that the movement would continue until the government ensures permanent wages and fulfils the demands of ASHA workers.
