“Chalak nahi, aaj Yatri”- a unique initiative taken in Siliguri on the day of Rath Yatra

Siliguri, 01st July: “Ami je riska wala din ki emni jabe? saradin bhat khabo na…” the lines from the Bengali song have somewhat become true in real life. Cycle rickshaws, once the most popular mode of public transport, are slowly fading into oblivion in the city. With people having several options to travel, the rickshaw pullers are now struggling for a living.

Intending to make them feel better even for a day, several social workers of Siliguri took a unique initiative on the day of Rath Yatra. On Friday, the social workers made the rickshaw pullers sit in their rickshaws and pulled them around the entire city starting from the Children’s Park. Packed meal and drinks were also handed over to the rickshaw pullers by social workers.

The citizens lauded the wonderful initiative of the social workers. The project was conducted under the aegis of renowned Policeman and Social Worker Bapon Das and other social organizations.
