Centre sanctions Rs 995.04 crores to convert Siliguri-Sevoke Road into 4-6 lane

Siliguri, 12th March: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has delivered a major gift to West Bengal today. Through his tweet, the minister announced that Rs 995.04 crores have been sanctioned by the Government of India for the construction of a 4-6 lane road from Shiv Mandir to Sevoke Army Cantonment on NH-31 (new NH-10) under Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts.
With the construction of the road, apart from Siliguri, people of Northeast India including Dooars, Hills, Sikkim will benefit significantly. Furthermore, new flyovers will be constructed at Darjeeling More and several other places. New bridges will also be built on the Matigara Balasan River.
“Lack of infrastructure and relating traffic congestion has been one of the major impediments towards the development of Silliguri city, and our entire region. People travelling to Siliguri city, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Dooars, Sikkim and rest of North East through the Balason – Darjeeling More – Sevoke section of the highway have had to face massive traffic problems on a daily basis.
This will help ease up the horrendous traffic problem people face daily in Darjeeling More, Matigara, 2-Mile, Salugara belt. This will also help ease traffic to Jalpaiguri, Alipurduars, Cooch Behar, Sikkim, Assam and rest of the North East India,” Darjeeling MP Raju Bista said in response to the Union Minister’s tweet.
Likewise, Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh also thanked the Union Minister. While Mayor Gautam Dev maintained that there was a long-standing demand to convert the road into 4-6 lanes. Discussions were also held on behalf of the state several times, he added.
