Phansidewa, 24th December: Police at the Bidhan Nagar Investigation Centre in Phansidewa foiled a major cattle smuggling attempt after intercepting a lorry and two postal parcel containers, rescuing a total of 103 cattle. The drivers of the vehicles managed to flee the spot.
According to police sources, personnel stopped one suspicious lorry and two postal parcel containers near the Madati toll plaza. On spotting the police, the drivers abandoned the vehicles and escaped. A subsequent search of the vehicles led to the recovery of cattle hidden inside.
Police rescued 22 cattle from the lorry, while 38 and 43 cattle were recovered from the two postal parcel containers respectively, taking the total count to 103. All the animals were safely rescued, and the seized vehicles were taken to the police station.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the cattle were being transported from Bihar through Assam with the intention of smuggling them into Bangladesh. Police have launched an investigation to identify and arrest those involved in the smuggling network.
