Siliguri, 04th April: Acting on the directives of the Election Commission of India to ensure smooth conduct of the election process, the administration has intensified checking across Siliguri.
In this regard, an SST team, along with police from Siliguri Police Station and Khalpara Outpost, conducted naka checking at Jalpai More and seized cash worth lakhs from a vehicle.
According to information, during a late-night drive, a vehicle belonging to Prashant Barman, a resident of Champasari, was stopped and searched. During the search, an amount of Rs 2.70 lakh was recovered from his bag.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that Prashant Barman runs a business in Gajoldoba and was returning home to Champasari with the cash when he was intercepted.
He has been directed to appear before the Election Commission’s monitoring team.
It is noteworthy that with the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in the state. As per rules, carrying cash exceeding Rs 50,000 without valid documents is considered a violation and may lead to seizure of the amount.
