Calcutta High Court sets aside regularisation of 313 volunteer teachers under GTA, calls appointments illegal

News Desk: The Calcutta High Court has set aside the regularisation and state government approval of 313 volunteer teachers under the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) on Wednesday, ruling that the appointments were illegal and could not be sustained in law.

Justice Biswajit Basu, while delivering the order, observed that the West Bengal government failed to justify the recruitment process for the appointments. The court held that the approvals granted by the state did not withstand judicial scrutiny as they were not backed by a lawful and transparent selection procedure.

The matter arose from a writ petition filed in 2023, challenging the legality of the appointments of 313 teachers across government-aided schools under the GTA.

The petitioners argued that the teachers were regularised without any formal or authorised recruitment process, violating established norms, rules, and judicial directives governing public employment.
