Siliguri, 13th December: In a unique blend of tradition and symbolism, a ‘Bot’ tree was ceremonially married to a ‘Pakur’ tree in the Madhya Shanti Nagar area of Siliguri on Saturday, drawing attention and festive enthusiasm from local residents.
The ceremony was organised by Soumitra Sannyal, a resident of the area, who followed all customary Hindu wedding rituals. The event featured traditional practices such as adorning the trees with wedding headgear, applying turmeric, playing ceremonial music, and performing sindoor daan. The locality witnessed a celebratory atmosphere, with women actively participating in the rituals and preparations.
The wedding was officiated by priest Sanjit Chakraborty, who stated that every ritual normally observed in a conventional marriage was performed during the ceremony. He added that the proceedings even included a symbolic farewell, similar to the tradition of a father bidding farewell to his daughter after marriage.
Soumitra Sannyal said he had planted the ‘Bot’ and ‘Pakur’ saplings several years ago within the premises of the local Sitala Temple. As the trees grew, he decided to organise their ceremonial marriage on the advice of the priest.
He further added that arrangements were also made to serve food to guests, completing the occasion in the spirit of a traditional wedding celebration.
