Siliguri, 30th January: A Booth Level Officer (BLO) from Siliguri died after jumping into the Teesta River near Sevoke on Thursday evening, casting a shadow of grief across the locality.
The deceased has been identified as Saravan Kumar Kahar, a resident of the Dharmanagar area under Siliguri’s Ward No. 01. He was the BLO of Booth No. 47 and also worked as a teacher at Khalpara Hindi Primary School. He is survived by his wife and a son.
According to sources, the incident took place around 4:30 pm. Eyewitnesses immediately informed the police, following which a team reached the spot and recovered the body from the river. The family was informed and rushed to the location. The body was later brought to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for further procedures.
Trinamool Congress leaders reached the hospital after the incident, along with Siliguri Municipal Corporation Mayor Gautam Deb. Ward No. 01 Councillor Sanjay Pathak stated that the deceased had earlier expressed mental pressure related to SIR (Special Intensive Revision) work.
Mayor Gautam Deb said that the matter has been informed to the Chief Minister and that he personally met the family members later at night to express condolences and support.
