Siliguri, 29th April: A heated atmosphere prevailed in Matigara Anchal II following a clash between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers over ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan. The incident resulted in the injury of six BJP workers. After the incident, the BJP called for a 12-hour shutdown in Matigara area of Siliguri.

It is to be noted that the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections concluded peacefully, however, two days after the polls, a violent clash surfaced between the BJP and TMC workers.

Reportedly, to implement the shutdown call, BJP workers took to the streets on Monday morning. They protested by burning tires on the road. Additionally, the BJP workers appealed to the people to shutdown the open shops in the area.

Earlier, on Sunday, a dispute emerged between the TMC and the BJP over the slogan of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in the said area. In no time the dispute escalated into a scuffle. In this regard, the BJP alleged that a few people associated with the TMC attacked them with sharp weapons over ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan. They added that a total of six individuals, including women, have been injured and are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Following the incident, BJP District President Arun Mandal and workers raised slogans by surrounding the Matigara police station on Sunday night. Mandal alleged that despite informing the IC of the police station regarding the incident in the morning, no action was initiated. He further stated that if the attackers were not arrested, they would continue with their protest in front of the police station.

Meanwhile, Bhajan Kanto Barman, Trinamool Congress president of Matigara Anchal II stated the allegation to be false.
