BJP stages a protest siege at Pradhan Nagar police station over the R.G. Kar incident

Siliguri, 23rd August: The ongoing unrest over the rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College has sparked widespread protests across the country.

On Friday evening, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified its agitation by organizing a police station siege campaign in multiple locations, including a demonstration at Pradhan Nagar police station in Siliguri.

In anticipation of the protest, the police had closed the gates of Pradhan Nagar police station, preventing BJP workers from entering. In response, BJP supporters took to National Highway 31, blocking the road and burning tyres for hours as a form of protest. The agitators demanded severe punishment for the culprits in the R.G. Kar case and called for enhanced measures to ensure women’s safety.

BJP leaders claimed that a delegation intended to engage in talks with the police on these issues but was denied entry to the station. This denial led to the highway blockade as a show of displeasure.

The protest lasted for about an hour before the BJP delegation was finally invited to the police station for talks. Following the talks, the highway blockade was lifted, but not before causing significant traffic disruption in the area.
