Siliguri, 29th May: Siliguri is grappling with tension that arose after allegations of failed drinking water services and contamination against the municipality. Amidst the uproar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Siliguri’s organizational district took to the streets on Wednesday, blocking roads and demanding the resignation of the mayor.
According to reports, the water supplied by the municipality has been contaminated, posing a serious health risk to residents. In response, Mayor Gautam Deb issued a statement prohibiting the consumption of tap water in the areas until June 2. This has triggered widespread commotion among the people, prompting opposition parties to question the role of the civic services.
On this day, the BJP joined a road blockade in Hashmi Chowk (Venus More) demanding the resignation of the mayor and blocked the traffic. BJP leaders asserted that the water’s contamination resulted from a significant fluctuation in Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), implicating municipal authorities for negligence. As a result, the residents have been unknowingly consuming the harmful water.
