BJP leader, two others arrested in pangolin scales smuggling case

Siliguri, 22nd January: The Sarugara Forest Department arrested a BJP leader on the charge of smuggling pangolin scales. The Forest Department has arrested three people so far.


It is to be noted that the forest department arrested Murshid Alam on Tuesday night on the charge of smuggling pangolin scales. The accused was produced at the Siliguri court and taken into remand.

Based on the information provided by arrested Murshid Alam and other sources, the forest workers, on Thursday night, arrested two other smugglers from Sevoke Road. The arrested accused have been identified as Sujan Das and Subrata Biswas.


It has been learned that Sujan Das is the convener of BJP’s IT cell in Falakata assembly constituency of Alipurduar district. They were produced before the Siliguri court today.

According to Sarugara Forest Department sources, Sujan Das is the main kingpin of the pangolin smuggling ring. Both the accused were produced in Siliguri court and have been taken into remand for further interrogation.

On the other hand, Sujan Das’s lawyer Akhil Biswas said the allegations are being raised to defame Das.
