Gajoldoba, 05th July: Uttam Roy, a prominent BJP leader of Rajganj has been arrested by the officials of Bhorer Alo police station on charges of illegally running a restaurant on government land. Reportedly, Roy, a resident of the Millanpally area under the Mantadari Gram Panchayat adjacent to Gajoldoba, was apprehended on Thursday night.
Reports indicate that Uttam Roy had constructed a restaurant along the Teesta Canal in Milanpally a few years ago, with multiple rooms on approximately three bighas of government-owned land. Subsequently, he was arrested and produced before the Jalpaiguri Court for further legal proceedings. During this, Roy expressed that he had been residing in the area for 35 years and had leased the land. However, he was being conspired against and wrongly arrested.
Meanwhile, Roy’s wife Mayarani Das Roy, Jalpaiguri district secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha, corroborated her husband’s statement asserting that the land has been in their possession since 1998 and described the arrest as political conspiracy. She further mentioned that several TMC leaders have lands in the area and that the administration is not taking any action against them. Additionally, the administration put up a signboard on the land occupied by a TMC leader in that area and did not face any legal consequences.
On the other hand, Rajganj BDO Prashant Barman and BLLRO Sukhen Roy arrived at the spot with heavy machinery and a large police force to demolish the restaurant and later returned without demolishing it due to unknown reasons.
In this regard, BLLRO Sukhen Roy said that the family has submitted some documents to the Magistrate. Further actions will be determined following verification. Following this, the next decision will be taken. However, the police had been instructed to verify the land and that the reason behind the arrest has not been ascertained.
