BJP flag put up at government water project site in Naxalbari, political row erupts

Naxalbari, 27th February: Political tension has surfaced in Naxalbari after a BJP flag was found installed at the Kilaram water project site, triggering sharp reactions from rival parties.

According to sources, the foundation stone of the Kilaram water project was laid in 2016 by the Chief Minister. Though the project later stalled, water supply reportedly continued for some time before being completely shut down in 2021. The installation of a BJP flag at the government project site has now sparked controversy in the area.

The Trinamool Congress has alleged that the act was done deliberately by the BJP to gain political mileage. Darjeeling District Trinamool Core Committee Member Arun Ghosh criticised the BJP, claiming the party was resorting to such actions after losing political ground in the region. He said such attempts for publicity would not be viewed positively by the public.

In response, BJP leaders stated that they were unaware of who had put up the flag. They claimed that party flags are commonly seen along roads and questioned the basis of the allegations. The party further argued that had the Model Code of Conduct been in force, the matter would have been treated as a violation. BJP representatives also accused the Trinamool of running governance through allowances and alleged irregularities.

Meanwhile, the Pradhan of Maniram Gram Panchayat stated that no formal complaint had yet been received. He added that an inquiry would be conducted and complaints would be lodged with the District Magistrate, BDO and police if necessary.
