Siliguri, 16th May: The Siliguri Bidhan Market Byabasayee Samity took part in a protest demonstration in support of various demands. Today, members of the committee staged a protest near the auto stand of the market.
According to reports, the Siliguri Bidhan Market Byabasayee Samity has been protesting for 62 years, seeking government intervention to address the persistent issues plaguing Bidhan Market, the city’s main marketplace. They have been advocating for the market to be renovated and restored annually. Despite sending multiple letters to the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority, urging them to grant ownership of the shops, no resolution has been achieved. Consequently, they decided to join the protest today. It has been announced that the protest will continue for the next three days.
Bapi Saha, the secretary of the Bidhan Market Byabasayee Samity, stated that numerous letters have been dispatched to the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority, requesting ownership rights for the business owners in Bidhan Market. However, they have not received any response thus far. If this issue remains unresolved in the coming days, they will initiate a large-scale agitation to draw attention to their cause.
