Bagdogra, 10th May: Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, a Bangladeshi national claiming to be a former intelligence agent has been arrested near the Bagdogra Army camp. The individual, identified as Ashraful Alam, is a resident of Rangpur district in Bangladesh.
According to reports, local residents spotted Alam wandering suspiciously in the MM Terai area near Bagdogra. They promptly informed personnel at the Bengdubi Army Cantonment. Acting on the tip-off, jawans from the 5th FOD unit detained the suspect.
Following his detention, Alam was handed over to the Bagdogra Police for further investigation. During preliminary questioning, he reportedly identified himself as a former Bangladeshi intelligence agent. He is believed to have illegally entered India six months ago by crossing the river at the Rajshahi border.
Police sources confirmed that Alam did not have any identity documents at the time of his arrest. Authorities plan to produce him in Siliguri court on Saturday, where a request for police remand will be made for further interrogation.
Tensions remain high in the area as officials continue to probe the circumstances surrounding his illegal entry and activities in India.
