Siliguri, 25th September: World River Day is celebrated every fourth Sunday in the month of September. This year it is being observed today on 25 September. On the morning of Mahalaya, various organizations in the city launched an awareness campaign and appealed to the people of Siliguri to save the rivers of Siliguri and North Bengal.
This morning, members of environmental organizations and voluntary organizations conducted an awareness campaign at Lal Mohan Moulik Ghat. Siliguri’s river Mahananda’s water is seeing a rise in pollution, contaminating the water body rapidly and making it hazardous to the environment. A case has also been registered in the National Green Tribunal regarding this.
Various organizations in the city have been raising their voices for many years to save the Mahananda River. Despite organizing many campaigns and programs river pollution could not be stopped due to various reasons. Therefore, on River Day, organizations came forward to make the people aware of those who were coming to the ghat for holding offerings to their ancestors on Sunday morning. Along with this, a rally was organized with placards in front of the Mahananda River.
