Kharibari, 29th June: Tension gripped Buraganj Gram Panchayat of Kharibari as locals protested against Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad Sabhadhipati Arun Ghosh and administration officials during their visit to oversee the Faecal Waste Management Project.
The project, aimed at managing both solid and faecal waste, encountered resistance from residents who expressed concerns about odors and flies due to the solid waste management activities. When officials, including forest and land officer Kishori Mohan Singh, Kharibari BDO Deepti Sau, and Buraganj Gram Panchayat Pradhan Anita Roy, attempted to install government signage on Saturday, locals vehemently opposed the initiative.
A sizable police contingent, led by Kharibari Police Station OC Monotosh Sarkar, was present to maintain order. Despite initial protests, the administration succeeded in placing the government signage after convincing the locals.
Residents fear further environmental hazards if faecal waste management activities proceed in the area. However, Sabhadhipati Arun Ghosh assured that environmentally friendly measures would be implemented as part of the project.
