Army officer Brijesh Thapa from Darjeeling martyred in encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir

Darjeeling, 16th July: Captain Brijesh Thapa, an army officer from Darjeeling, was martyred in an encounter with terrorists in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir. The news has plunged Darjeeling into mourning, with family members grieving bitterly upon hearing the news.

Captain Thapa, aged 27, was born in Lebong, Darjeeling, and also had a residence in Siliguri. His father, Bhuvnesh Kumar Thapa, also served in the army. Brijesh completed his higher education in Mumbai, where he earned a Bachelor of Technology degree. Inspired by his father, he aspired to serve the country as an army officer from a young age.

In 2018, Brijesh successfully passed the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination and joined the army in 2019. His initial posting was with the 145 Army Air Defence of the Indian Army, before being transferred to the 10 Rashtriya Rifles in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, for additional regimental duty in September last year. He was scheduled to return home this month.

Captain Thapa’s body will be flown to Siliguri’s Bagdogra Airport on Tuesday by a special plane. It will then be taken to his ancestral home in Lebong, Darjeeling, on Wednesday, where he will be cremated with state honours.
