Siliguri, 09th December: Carrying a strong message against crimes against women and demanding exemplary punishment in the ‘Abhaya’ case, the ‘Angikar Yatra’ was launched from Siliguri on Tuesday under the initiative of ‘Jago Nari Jago Bohnishikha’. The march aims to spread awareness about women’s safety, dignity, and rights across the state.
Members of the organisation took out a rally from Siliguri Junction on Tuesday morning. ‘Abhaya’s’ parents were also present during the march. A large number of people joined the rally holding placards, showing solidarity with the cause. The rally concluded at Baghajatin Park, where a public programme was organised and several speakers, including ‘Abhaya’s’ parents, addressed the gathering.
Organisation members stated that strict enforcement of laws, speedy trials, and a change in social mindset are essential to prevent the recurrence of brutal crimes like that of ‘Abhaya’. They said the long ‘Angikar Yatra’ would help build confidence among people and spread the message of respect and security for women even in remote areas.
It has been informed that the yatra will reach Raiganj on Wednesday and will pass through various parts of the state before finally concluding at College Street in Kolkata.
According to the organisers, the initiative has already received a widespread response from the public while raising awareness on women’s safety.
