Rajganj, 14th August: The administration successfully intervened to prevent child marriage in the Ambari area of Binnaguri Gram Panchayat in the Rajganj block. The incident occurred when a 14-year-old girl from Ambari was scheduled to marry a minor boy from Bihar on Wednesday.
Upon receiving the news, local panchayat authorities, including Binnaguri Gram Panchayat Pradhan Samijuddin Ahmed, Panchayat member Shukla Roy, and other officials, promptly arrived at the location. The families were shocked to witness the local authorities present at the scene.
In this regard, Panchayat Pradhan Samijuddin Ahmed informed the girl’s family that the marriage could not proceed due to the bride’s age being below the legal age for marriage. He explained the legal consequences of arranging a marriage for minors and emphasized that such actions are against the law. Initially, the bride’s family was reluctant to comply, but after being warned of potential legal action, they agreed to halt the wedding ceremony.
Meanwhile, the girl’s family claimed that they were ignorant of the legal prohibitions against child marriage and mentioned that a traditional pre-marriage ritual had been planned as per their community’s customs. They assured the marriage would only proceed once the girl legally became an adult.
GP Pradhan Samijuddin Ahmed confirmed the intervention, stating that the marriage of a 14-year-old girl to a minor boy was reported, and the team from the Gram Panchayat intervened to prevent the marriage. He also announced that the Gram Panchayat would conduct awareness campaigns regarding the issue of child marriage.
