Siliguri, 01st February: The 516th birth anniversary of Bir Chila Roy was observed with reverence and respect at Baneswar More on the Eastern Bypass in Siliguri on the initiative of the Rajbanshi community.
The programme was attended by several distinguished personalities, including noted social worker JP Kanadia, Dr Swapan Roy, popularly known as the doctor of the poor, and Tanay Sarkar, OC of Ashighar Sub-Traffic Guard, along with other eminent guests.
The event began with garlanding and floral tributes at the statue of Bir Chila Roy. Speakers highlighted his valour, efficient administration, and his immense contribution to the history of the Rajbanshi community. They said that Bir Chila Roy is not only a pride of the Rajbanshi community but also a symbol of pride for the entire North Bengal region.
Organisers said that no cultural programmes were held this year due to the upcoming Madhyamik examinations. They added that large-scale cultural events and celebrations will be organised after the examinations conclude.
