Siliguri, 02nd June: In a recent development, five members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) including the Siliguri organizational district BJP youth president Arijit Das, were granted bail on Sunday after being arrested for shoving and pushing the police officers in a protest outside the police station.
The incident occurred amidst escalating tensions between opposition parties and the local administration. Notably, there have been protests over various issues against the mayor, including the disruption of drinking water services. On Saturday, the BJP Mahila Morcha organized a gherao campaign around the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, leading to a confrontation between BJP workers and the police. Amid the unrest, several BJP workers were arrested for pushing and shoving the police officials.
In response to the arrests, the BJYP staged a protest outside the Siliguri police station. The situation escalated and the police had to resort to lathi charges, resulting in injuries to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Siliguri police station, Prasanjit Biswas. Subsequently, five BJP workers, including Arijit Das, were arrested and charged under various sections.
However, after the court hearing the arrested accused were presented before the Siliguri court and released on bail. Upon their release, the BJP workers were welcomed by supporters outside the court premises.
