Siliguri, 01st October: In a significant breakthrough, the Special Task Force (STF) in collaboration with the Siliguri police successfully seized a four-wheeler carrying a substantial amount of cannabis from the Ambari Canal road under the jurisdiction of the New Jalpaiguri (NJP) police. The incident led to the arrest of the accused identified as Govinda Ghosh (35), a resident of Khudirampally located under the Jalpaiguri district.
According to reports, the authorities conducted an operation based on a tip-off and halted the four-wheeler. During the search, about 26 packets containing cannabis were recovered from concealed in a hidden chamber at the back of the vehicle. The total weight of the recovered cannabis amounted to 161 kg and 895 grams with an estimated market value of Rs 16 lakhs. Preliminary investigations revealed that the contraband was being smuggled to Bihar. During the interrogation, two other names came to the fore in connection to executing the illicit activity.
Significantly, the accused confessed to having loaded the contraband from Cooch Behar with the assistance of an individual, namely, Ainul Haque. He further disclosed the identification of his co-driver Pradip Sarkar, who fled the scene during the arrest. Subsequently, the accused was apprehended in accordance with the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act. At present, the police have initiated a hunt for the associated criminals.
