Darjeeling, 08th May: The birth anniversary of Rabindra Nath Tagore was observed at Mungpoo following all government protocols owing to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown.

Rabindra Memorial Welfare Center offical along with the NHPC Teesta Low Dam Project Stage-III IC offered khadas and garlands to the great poet’s statue.

The programme was organized at Rabindranath Bhavan, a museum at Mungpoo, which is one of the first places in the country to be established as homage to Tagore in the year 1944.

The Rabindranath Bhavan which has been converted to a museum has a rich past with the poet himself having stayed four times in his visit to Darjeeling between 1938 and 1940 because of his love for the place and a special bond with Maitreyi Devi, daughter of his friend who stayed there as she was married to the then Director of Cinchona Plantation.

The reminiscences of his stay at Mungpoo were published by Maitreyi Devi in her book ‘Mungpoote Rabindranath’ containing an account of his stay in Mungpoo.

Tagore is also said to have penned down about 12 poems in the said house and in the year 1940 he is also said to have celebrated his birthday there with the locals. The bungalow presently has many belongings of Tagore from furniture like beds and chair and some of his original writings.
