Siliguri, 26th May: A total of 131 families displaced by severe river erosion caused by the Teesta River have been successfully rehabilitated in a new settlement named Teesta Pally in Siliguri. Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb visited the area on Monday to inspect the condition of the resettled residents.
In October last year, villages like Laltong and Chamkandangi under Dabgram I Gram Panchayat were completely submerged by the Teesta River, rendering many families homeless. In response, the state government promptly initiated rehabilitation measures.
The displaced families were resettled in Majua Basti, and the area was later renamed ‘Teesta Pally’ by the Chief Minister. During her North Bengal visit, she personally handed over land pattas to the affected families. Under the state’s ‘Banglar Bari’ scheme, permanent housing is also being arranged for them, with the first installment expected to be distributed next month.
During his visit, Mayor Gautam Deb interacted with residents and took note of their concerns and needs. The residents expressed satisfaction with the state government’s initiative, stating that although they lost their original homes, they now feel hopeful about rebuilding their lives in a new place.
