Naxalbari, 01st March: 1,200 voters in Naxalbari’s Totaram and Kalua Jote areas have been marked under the ‘Under Adjudication’ category in the final voter list, creating fear among residents, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
Residents allege that despite having their names on the 2002 voter list, many people have been kept under adjudication. There are concerns that this could affect voting rights in the upcoming elections.
Mohammad Islam, former deputy head of Naxalbari Gram Panchayat and ex Sahakari Sabhapati of the Panchayat Samiti, is among those whose entire family has been listed under adjudication. A similar situation has been reported for Mohammad Zakir Hossain’s family.
Even after verification and hearings, the names of several long-standing residents continue to remain under adjudication. The affected community members are worried about whether their names will be included in the voter list in the coming days.
