Phansidewa, 14th July: Sensation spread in Phansidewa after Chirta Debnath, an accused arrested for assaulting and burning a woman civic volunteer, attempted suicide in police custody.
Reportedly, Chirta Debnath tried to hang herself while in custody at the Phansidewa police station. She was quickly rescued by police and initially admitted to Phansidewa Rural Hospital before being transferred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) in critical condition.
It is to be noted that Chirta Debnath was accused of breaking into the home of Mampi Debnath Maitra, a pregnant civic volunteer in Phansidewa’s Shaktinagar area, and setting her on fire. Following the complaint, police arrested Debnath and, after an investigation, took her to Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court where she was remanded for 7 days.
On Sunday, while in custody, Chirta Debnath attempted suicide by hanging herself in the washroom. The swift response of the police personnel ensured she was rescued and given immediate medical care.
