Sikkim, 22nd July: The death toll in the tunnel tragedy in Namchi District of Sikkim, has risen to 20, while rescue teams continue efforts to rescue workers still believed to be trapped inside. Officials fear the death toll could rise further as the operation continues.
The incident occurred inside the under-construction tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung, Jholungey, in Namchi district. According to preliminary information, a methane gas explosion occurred inside the tunnel during construction work on Monday, triggering a partial collapse. The powerful blast trapped several workers beneath the debris. While a few workers were rescued alive, five others remain trapped inside the tunnel, with rescue teams racing against time to reach them.
A large-scale rescue operation is underway with multiple teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), including a specialised unit from Siliguri, deployed at the site. Rescue personnel are facing major challenges due to darkness inside the tunnel, low oxygen levels, and the collapsed section. Heavy machinery and specialised equipment are being used to reach the trapped workers.
Senior administrative officials are monitoring the rescue operation at the site. West Bengal Minister Bishal Lama has also reached the location. The Sikkim government has announced compensation for the families of those killed and injured.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister have spoken with the Chief Minister of Sikkim to review the situation. Officials said some of the deceased workers were from West Bengal, including residents of Jalpaiguri district.
