Alipurduar, 02nd September: Tensions erupted during the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) siege campaign in Alipurduar, leading to the use of water cannons and tear gas by police to disperse the protesters.
The BJP organized the campaign to encircle the district administrative building, Dooars Kanya, in response to the R.G. Kar incident. MP Manoj Tigga, along with other BJP leaders, led a march from Alipurduar Chawpathi B.M. Club Maidan to Dooars Kanya. The situation became tense when the procession reached Dooars Kanya.
Reportedly, police had set up a large barricade in front of Dooars Kanya. As the BJP workers attempted to breach the barricade, water cannons and tear gas shells were deployed, resulting in minor injuries to MP Manoj Tigga and several BJP supporters. Following the clashes, BJP leaders and activists continued their protest on the streets.
MP Manoj Tigga condemned the use of force, claiming the march was intended to be peaceful. He further vowed that the movement would intensify.
