Darjeeling, 02nd October: Under the joint auspices of the Department of Information and Culture of the Gorkhaland Regional Administration and the Darjeeling Sadar Memorial Establishment Committee, the birth anniversary of the Father of the nation Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was observed and the re-installing of the Veer Gorkha Memorial was conducted, today.
The GTA Chairman Anit Thapa and former GTA Chairman Binay Tamang inaugurated the memorial of the Gorkha soldier situated at the top of the Gorkha Ranga Mancha Bhawan through remote control. The statue is a symbol of heroism and bravery of the Gorkhas.
While the GTA Chairman Anit Thapa was present as the chief guest in the programme, other distinguished guests including former GTA Chairman and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha President Binay Tamang, Darjeeling District Magistrate S Ponnambalam, GTA Chief Secretary Surendra Gupta, Secretary P. T. Pradhan, NBDD Chairman Amar Singh Rai, Darjeeling District and Sessions Judge Uttam Kumar Shah, NCC Officer P. Acharya, HMI Principal Gp Capt Jai Kishan, senior literary figure Krishna Singh Moktan , Senior Citizen P. C. Agrawal, Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) Darjeeling Branch President Ajay Edwards, SDO Sadar Darjeeling Police SP M. Santosh and others marked their presence too.
It is to recall that the statue of the Gorkha soldier installed at the Bhanu Bhawan (Gorkha Ranga Mancha Bhawan) was removed a few years ago by the then administration led by Bimal Gurung. Today, on the initiative of GJM President Binay Tamang, the statue was re-installed in its old spot.
