Police blast water cannons at DYFI cadres during the Uttarkanya campaign, rioters throw stones at the policemen

Siliguri, 12th February: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) cadres launched the Uttarkanya Campaign against various policies of the Central and State Government, on Wednesday.

However, the police tried to stop the procession from reaching Uttarkanya by placing barricades at the Teen Batti intersection. On the other hand, the situation became quite tense for some time after the demonstrators tried to break the barricades and move forward.

To bring the situation under control, the police eventually gained momentum and launched water cannons at the protesters. Due to this, the angry DYFI cadres then staged a sit-in protest on the main road in Teen Batti More and demanded the police to apologize. Reports of some rioters stoning the policemen also emerged from the scene, during which a DYFI supporter sustained injures. However, the situation was brought under control only after the intervention of the top police officers.
