Siliguri, 30th May: In a swift joint operation, the NJP Government Railway Police (GRP) and Special Operations Group (SOG) successfully apprehended an absconding accused in a minor rape case from Hyderabad within 72 hours. The accused, identified as Nayan Barman (35), was brought to Siliguri on Friday. Barman, originally from Buniadpur, resided in Hatiadanga and worked as an e-rickshaw driver.
The alleged incident occurred three days ago within a vacant compartment on the railway yard area of NJP railway station. According to reports, Barman is accused of luring a minor girl into the train, which was awaiting cleaning, and subsequently raping her. The revelation of the incident caused a stir on the station premises and raised significant concerns about the railway’s security system.
Following the incident, the GRP and SOG cell launched an immediate investigation. Their intelligence led them to discover that the accused had fled Siliguri and was hiding in Hyderabad. A special team from GRP and SOG promptly departed for Hyderabad. The accused was arrested in Hyderabad on Thursday and arrived back in Siliguri on Friday morning. It has been reported that the accused was known to the victim’s family, being a friend of her father.
Today, Nayan Barman was produced before the Jalpaiguri court, where authorities have sought his remand for further investigation into the case.
