Siliguri, 18th June: A man suffered burn injuries after allegedly pouring kerosene on himself and setting himself on fire in the Jaleswari Padmapara area near the Eastern Bypass in Siliguri on Thursday, triggering a stir in the locality. The injured man has been identified as Mithun Sarkar.
According to local sources, the incident took place near a Kali temple in the area, where the man allegedly poured kerosene on himself and set himself ablaze. Hearing his screams, nearby residents rushed to the spot and attempted to extinguish the fire.
Locals said Mithun had previously lived in the area with his mother. Following her death a few years ago, he had moved elsewhere. He reportedly returned to the locality on Thursday before taking the extreme step.
Upon receiving information, personnel from Ashighar Outpost and the Fire and Emergency Services Department reached the spot. The injured man was rescued and taken to Siliguri District Hospital for treatment.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the reason behind the incident.
