Main accused arrested in Siliguri mob lynching case, three held so far

Siliguri, 01st May: Police from Bhakti Nagar police station have arrested the main accused, Subrata Barman, in connection with the mob lynching incident that took place in the Ektiasal area over suspicion of cattle theft. The accused is reportedly a resident of the same locality. With this, the total number of arrests in the case has risen to three.

Earlier, two other accused, Bhajan Roy and Sanjay Barman, were arrested within 24 hours of the incident and produced before the court, following which they were taken into remand.

According to information, on the morning of 25th April, two individuals from Chopra were allegedly caught by a mob in Ward No. 40’s Ektiasal area on suspicion of cattle theft. The duo was tied to a pole and brutally assaulted. Safikul Islam succumbed to injuries at the hospital, while Rabul Haque sustained serious injuries.

Following the incident, the victim’s family lodged a complaint at Bhakti Nagar police station. Tension gripped the area after the incident, prompting deployment of central forces along with heavy police presence from Siliguri Metropolitan Police to maintain law and order.

During the investigation, police identified the main accused based on video footage and interrogation. He has been produced before the Jalpaiguri court, while efforts are underway to nab the remaining accused.
