Love Beyond Bounds: Two women defy odds to marry in Siliguri, face numerous threats

Siliguri, 17th August: The evocative words of Jagjit Singh’s renowned ghazal, “Na umar ki seema ho, na janm ka ho bandhan, Jab pyaar kare koi, to dekhe keval man, Nayi reet chalaakar tum, ye reet amar kar do…,” have been given a poignant real-life meaning by two young women in Siliguri. Their story reflects a journey from friendship to love, and then to a deep commitment that led them to wed in a temple, with the divine as their witness.

Swapna Basak and Priyanka Basak, residents of Hatiadanga near Siliguri, formed an unbreakable bond after meeting in December of the preceding year. Their friendship bloomed into love, a love so profound that they decided to solemnize their union at a temple on August 15, considering the Mother Goddess as a symbol of their devotion. However, the families of both young women have staunchly opposed this union, resulting in threats and pressure.

Despite familial disapproval, Swapna and Priyanka held steadfast to their love. Their commitment to each other transcended societal norms, and they chose to honor their love by marrying in a way that felt true to them. However, this courageous decision has come at a cost, as they have faced opposition from various quarters, including their own families.

Both women have reported receiving calls from different sources, with pressures mounting to end their relationship. Nevertheless, Swapna and Priyanka are resolute in their stance, asserting that their love is unbreakable and that they cannot envision a life without each other. Their story stands as a testament to the power of love, determination, and the challenges that individuals can face when their choices defy societal expectations. As Swapna and Priyanka continue to navigate the complexities of their situation, their narrative sheds light on the struggles and resilience of those who choose to follow their hearts, even in the face of adversity.
