Darjeeling, 25th September: A section of the Takdah Rural Hospital in Darjeeling was damaged after a landslide struck the area adjacent to the hospital early Friday morning. Part of the hospital building collapsed following the landslide, leaving a relative of a patient trapped under the debris.
Panic spread across the hospital premises following the incident. Local residents quickly reached the spot and launched a rescue operation, and managed to pull the trapped individual out from the rubble. The individual was subsequently taken to Darjeeling Sadar Hospital for treatment and is currently undergoing medical care.
According to local sources, six people were present at the Takdah Rural Hospital when the incident occurred. The sudden landslide and damage to the building triggered concern among patients and their families.
Administrative officials also reached the site to assess the situation. Considering the safety of the patients following the structural damage, authorities relocated them to another facility.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the impact of continuous rain and landslides in the hilly region.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has been affecting the hills since Thursday night due to a low-pressure system. Water levels have risen in several rivers, including the Balason, Teesta and Mahananda. The administration is monitoring the river levels, while residents living along the banks of the Teesta have been advised to remain alert.
