Kharibari, 27th September: A man previously identified in police records as a ‘lineman’ allegedly involved in buffalo smuggling operations was arrested with a firearm and a round of ammunition at Chekarmari along the Bengal-Bihar border in Kharibari.
The accused, identified as Khurshid Alam, was reportedly entering Kharibari from Bihar when police intercepted him at Chekarmari. During a search, a firearm and one round of ammunition were allegedly recovered from his possession.
Following the arrest, Alam was produced before the Siliguri Sub-divisional Court on Sunday.
In a separate operation, Kharibari police seized a container allegedly being used to facilitate buffalo smuggling and arrested two individuals. A total of 40 buffaloes were also recovered from the vehicle.
The arrested individuals were identified as Barkatullah of Purnia and Pradip Mandal of Malda. Both were produced before the Siliguri Sub-divisional Court on Sunday.
Police are continuing their investigation into the alleged buffalo smuggling network and the involvement of the arrested individuals.
