Jalpaiguri, 24th September: A teacher has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Jalpaiguri POCSO Court for raping a Standard 10 student after allegedly calling her on the pretext of teaching. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the accused and directed that Rs 4 lakh be provided as financial compensation to the girl’s family.
The incident took place in August 2024. According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Nitai Biswas, was an English teacher at a tutorial home in Maynaguri. He allegedly called the student on the pretext of teaching and forcibly took her to a resort, where he allegedly raped her.
Following the incident, the girl’s family lodged a complaint at Maynaguri police station. Based on the complaint, police began an investigation and arrested Nitai Biswas.
After completing the investigation, police submitted a chargesheet before the court. The trial continued for nearly two years, with the court considering the statements of nine witnesses and various pieces of evidence.
The court found the accused guilty and announced the sentence on Thursday. Along with life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh, the court directed that Rs 4 lakh be provided to the girl’s family as compensation.
