Rajganj, 31st October: The ICDS centre in Kantipara, under the Kukurjan area of Rajganj, is in a dilapidated condition, raising serious concerns over the safety of children attending the centre. Concrete has crumbled from the pillars, exposing the iron rods, while plaster has peeled off the floor. Local residents fear that parts of the structure could collapse at any moment, potentially causing a major accident.
The centre was reportedly built in 1996. Its infrastructure has deteriorated over the years, and the premises also lack a boundary wall. Despite the unsafe conditions, children from the area are expected to use the centre for their early education and development.
The centre serves children from three villages, Kantipara, Moynadangi and Mantapara, making it an important facility for early childhood care and development. However, concerns have also been raised over the lack of a permanent teacher for the past several years. The centre’s services are reportedly continuing mainly through the distribution of cooked meals.
Centre worker Suniti Roy said that, apart from preparing and serving food to children, she is also responsible for providing services to pregnant women and mothers. She added that there is currently no one available to take responsibility for teaching the children. A worker named Gayatri Singh was previously employed at the centre but later moved elsewhere.
Local residents have expressed concern over the condition of the building and the lack of teaching staff at the centre.
When contacted regarding the issue, local panchayat representatives and the pradhan assured that steps would be taken to resolve the problems at the earliest.
