Naxalbari, 09th October: A cyclist was killed after being hit by a pickup van at Kalabari More in Naxalbari on Thursday, triggering anger among local residents. Police have arrested the driver and seized the vehicle involved in the accident.
According to reports, Philip Kerketta was returning home with milk on his bicycle along the Naxalbari-Panighata Road when a pickup van coming from the Naxalbari side hit him.
Locals rescued the injured cyclist and rushed him to Naxalbari Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the accident, local residents alleged that the pickup van was carrying buffaloes at the time of the incident. Naxalbari Police have launched an investigation to determine whether the vehicle was transporting buffaloes.
Police subsequently arrested the driver, Rajen Barman, a resident of Fakna Jote, from the toll plaza area. The pickup van involved in the accident has also been seized.
The incident sparked anger among residents, who blocked the road at Kalabari More for an extended period. Naxalbari Police and the traffic guard reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The body has been sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for post-mortem examination. Naxalbari Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
