Jalpaiguri, 01st October: A motorcycle caught fire after a person allegedly dropped a burning matchstick near it after lighting a cigarette at a roadside garage in Jalpaiguri on Wednesday evening. The incident took place along the road leading to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital, triggering panic in the area.
According to reports, Siliguri resident Subrata Bhowmik had taken his motorcycle to a roadside garage in Jalpaiguri for repairs. While the repair work was underway, a person standing near the garage allegedly dropped a burning matchstick close to the motorcycle after lighting a cigarette. The bike caught fire soon after.
The flames quickly spread and engulfed the motorcycle. As the fire broke out, panic gripped the area, particularly as a nursing home is located close to the spot.
Firefighters were informed and soon reached the scene. Their efforts brought the fire under control, but the motorcycle had been completely gutted by then. A garage worker was injured while attempting to extinguish the flames.
The incident caused a stir in the area, with the sudden fire drawing attention from people nearby.
