Siliguri, 05th October: Bhakti Nagar Police have arrested the boyfriend of a Rajasthan woman nearly a month after her mysterious death in Siliguri. The arrested accused has been identified as Rana Dey (26), a resident of Fakdaibari.
According to police sources, the deceased, Shivani, a resident of Rajasthan, had come to Siliguri in 2023 in search of work and was working as a floor artist at a pub and bar. During this period, she met Rana Dey and the two entered into a relationship. They had reportedly been in a relationship for around two and a half years.
Shivani’s father, Ajit Singh, lodged a complaint at Bhakti Nagar Police Station, holding Rana Dey responsible for his daughter’s death. According to the complaint, Rana allegedly took money from Shivani and harassed her when she tried to end the relationship. Her father also alleged that Rana’s brother had threatened to kill Shivani.
According to the complaint, Shivani went to her home in Rajasthan on August 4 and returned to Siliguri on August 28. Her father alleged that Rana began harassing her more after her return.
On September 7, Shivani went to a friend’s birthday party. She returned to her PG in the early hours of September 8. At around 5 am, her friends arrived and found the door to her room locked from inside. After breaking open the door, they found Shivani hanging inside the room.
Her family members lodged a written complaint on September 10. Based on the complaint, police inspected the scene, recorded statements from witnesses and collected evidence including Shivani’s mobile phone and WhatsApp chats.
Based on the investigation, police arrested Rana Dey from Fakdaibari on Sunday. He was produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Monday.
Police are questioning the accused and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and other aspects related to Shivani’s death.
