Bailey bridge at Dudhia inaugurated, restoring Siliguri-Mirik connectivity

Dudhia, 08th July: Relief has finally arrived for residents of Dudhia as a 60-metre Bailey bridge over the Balason River has been inaugurated, restoring the crucial road link between Siliguri and Mirik. The bridge was constructed by the Indian Army and inaugurated virtually by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

The Siliguri-Mirik route had remained cut off since 18th June after the temporary Hume pipe bridge over the Balason River collapsed. In response, the Indian Army first constructed a footbridge on 23rd June to facilitate pedestrian movement before completing the Bailey bridge.

The virtual inauguration ceremony was attended by administrative officials and senior Army officers. During the event, the Chief Minister thanked the Indian Army for completing the project in record time.

Residents welcomed the inauguration of the bridge, which is expected to ease travel between Siliguri and Mirik.

The District Magistrate said the approach road, measuring around 200 metres, has also been completed. Vehicles weighing up to 9 metric tonnes will be allowed to use the Bailey bridge, while heavy vehicles will not be permitted. He added that a few finishing works are still pending, and vehicular movement is expected to begin from Wednesday or Thursday.

Meanwhile, construction of the permanent bridge is underway and is expected to be completed by March next year.
