Siliguri, 24th June: After heavy rainfall lashed Siliguri in the past few days, several areas including Ward No.35 were inundated. On Friday, the local people protested by blocking the main road leading to NJP station. They alleged that the Phuleshwari river was not cleaned for a very long time and due to the absence of a proper drainage system in the area, the river water entered their residences. The protest went on for almost an hour.
Upon receiving the news, NJP police and councillor Shampa Nandi reached the spot and tried to calm the protestors. Also, Borough chairman Jayant Saha reached the spot to talk to the residents. He assured that the Siliguri Municipal Corporation would start the work to clean the river soon.
