61 digital letterboxes launched in Siliguri

Siliguri, 13th August: India Post has launched digital letterbox with bar codes in Siliguri to strengthen tracking of mails amid the ongoing pandemic.


The postmen have been provided with mobiles using which they will scan the barcode on the letterbox. With this system, the concerned post office will get information about who opened the letterbox, when and where.

The use of letterbox has increased considerably amid the pandemic to prevent crowds. However, the use of digital letterboxes is more convenient as it helps the postal department and the higher authorities to keep track concerning the time of opening the letterbox and which postman has opened it.


Around 61 letterboxes in the city have been converted into a digital letterbox. Arrangements are being made to open each letterbox twice a day and also to open the letterbox in front of the main post office every single hour.

In this context, Postmaster Ratan Sarkar stated that digital letterboxes are highly convenient as it is of great help for the general public. He added that the department intends to change the misconception the common people have regarding the process of sending a letter through the mail.
