Kharibari, 02nd October: The Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad has initiated development work in rural areas, with a new 450-metre paved road being constructed in the tribal-dominated Tritola area under Buraganj Gram Panchayat in Kharibari.
The road is being constructed with an allocation of ₹20.59 lakh from the Mahakuma Parishad’s Backward Classes Welfare Fund. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad District Panchayat Council Chairman Ajay Oraon on Friday.
After the foundation-laying ceremony, Ajay Oraon said the road work was supposed to have been completed eight months ago but was not undertaken by the previous government for reasons unknown. He said that after the BJP government came to power, a meeting was held with the Darjeeling District Magistrate and Mahakuma Parishad officials, where it was decided that all stalled projects and works that had not yet started would be taken up immediately.
Ajay Oraon also warned that the contractor would be blacklisted if the work was not carried out transparently and as required.
The road was previously unpaved, causing difficulties for local residents. Residents expressed happiness over the commencement of the road construction, saying that work on the road has finally begun after decades since Independence.
